Emeka Thaddues Njoku, PhD AFHEA

Head, Research

Emeka Thaddues Njoku is the Research Head and an inaugural co-convenor of ANeCS. He is an Assistant Professor in the International Development Department at the University of Birmingham. His research focuses on global counter-terrorism norms and examines their impact on the spaces and agency of civil society organisations. He has also explored the gendered and sexual consequences of counter-terrorism laws, policies, and practices, bringing a nuanced perspective to this critical study area.

Dr. Njoku's work has received significant recognition and support from prominent institutions. He has been awarded funding from the British Academy in the UK, the American Council of Learned Societies, and the Social Science Research Council in the USA. His research has also been supported by the Brown International Advanced Research Institute fellowship at Brown University, the Carnegie Funds for Conference Attendance via the Institute of International Education, the American Political Science Association, and the Centennial Centre for Political Science and Public Affairs in Washington, DC. Additional funding and fellowships have come from the Makarere Institute of Social Research in Uganda and the University of Ibadan Postgraduate College in Nigeria.

Dr. Njoku has published extensively in respected academic journals, including International Affairs, Studies in Conflict and Terrorism, Voluntas: International Journal of Voluntary and Nonprofit Organisations, and Development Policy Review, among others. His work continues to shape the discourse on counter-terrorism and civil society. He is also the co-author, with Scott N. Romaniuk, of the book Counter-terrorism and Civil Society: Post-9/11 Progress and Challenges, which was published by Manchester University Press.

Dr. Njoku holds a PhD in Political Science from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria, earned in 2019. He also obtained a Master of Science in Political Science from the same institution in 2010, following his Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Political Science from Enugu State University of Science and Technology in 2005. In his role at ANeCS, Dr. Njoku is pivotal in overseeing the development and dissemination of research and publications that advance alternative perspectives on security and counter-terrorism across Africa.

Emeka is a founding member of ANeCS, and he is from Nigeria, West Africa.
